The faliure of the 50 mph trike was most likely not caused by wear and tear on the engine, or even damaged parts, but by a simple mistake in the tuning process. It only takes a few seconds with a flat blade screwdriver and tuning it will tell you if you need to go richer or leaner on the pilot/slow jet. Answer (1 of 9): It depends where you are in the operating range and what constitutes “lean”. For low-load, light throttle operation lean is anything above stochiometric, 14.7:1 air to fuel ratio - or an equivalence ratio (lambda) of 1. Reason 3: Exhaust leak. Exhaust leaking before it exits the system will result in a lower back pressure, which may cause the bike to run hot. Look for loose clamps, damaged donut gaskets, or even holes or cracks in the pipe. Repair or refit to see if this improves things.Lean Mixture Symptoms - 1 - It is difficult to apply the throttle quickly or the engine picks up speed when the throttle is rolled off. 2 - The engine knocks or Pings or overheats. 3 - The engine surges or hunts for a stable RPM while cruising at part throttle. 4 - Engine acceleration is flat or slow to pick up.Taking out air restricion makes for a leaner running engine. The first thing you should do is fire up your bike and let it run a few minutes to get the engine oil warm and circulating. It will also help with draining. It’s a best practice to change the crankcase oil after every three hours or so of racing. Trail riding and easier use require less-frequent oil changes. The Theory of Air-leaks. Unlike all 4 cycle engines, the two cycle engines in all two-stroke engines must have a completely air tight lower end. The normal vacuum in the 2 cycle engine's lower end will draw a mixture of fuel and air from the carburetor though the intake manifold. Once this fuel air mixture has been sealed off by the reed valve ... For a rich carburetor adjustment, turn the adjustment screw clockwise (in toward the carb body) a tad to eliminate a lean running condition. All adjustments should be made with a hot engine.
